To deal violently with, despoil, devastate, ruin, plunder, or oppress. A stronger force ruthlessly strips security, peace, provision, or dignity from the weaker. In prophetic literature (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Micah) shadad describes national-scale devastation — armies, empires, and corrupt rulers who lay waste to what God intended to flourish. The public square application: leaders and institutions can shadad communities while appearing prosperous and legitimate — exactly what Job observes in Job 12:6.
